Why Parking in Rome Is Costing You More Than You Think

Rome has approximately 2.8 million registered vehicles and a historic center that was built, street by street, over two thousand years before the automobile existed. The result is one of the worst parking markets in Europe.

The numbers

In the central ZTL zones, driving without a permit is an automatic fine. Around those zones, the blue-stripe paid parking areas cost between 1 and 2 euros per hour and are almost always full by 8am. The nearest garage to most residential neighborhoods charges 200 to 400 euros per month for a dedicated bay.

For a driver who commutes five days a week, street parking costs alone run 80 to 150 euros a month, not counting the 20 to 40 minutes of daily circling.

The supply that exists but is invisible

Rome has no shortage of parking spaces in absolute terms. Buildings throughout Prati, Parioli, Testaccio, and Trastevere have private garages, courtyard bays, and underground lots. Many sit empty during the day when residents are at work, during August when families leave the city, and permanently when an elderly resident stops driving.

This supply is invisible because it has no public address. The space exists. The driver cannot find it.

What Spot Run does differently
