How to rent a private parking space: hourly, monthly or long-term

October 14, 2026|Spot Run Team

Rent by the hour if you need a spot for a meeting or an errand. Rent by the month if you park near home or work most days. Take a long-term lease if you will need the same space for a year. Whichever you pick, check four things before you pay: the space number, a landmark photo, the access method and a phone contact.

This guide is for city drivers, especially in Bucharest, who are tired of circling and want a private spot they can trust.

Hourly, monthly or long-term: which one fits

Start with how many days a week you actually park in the same place. Not how many days you wish you did.

Rental typeFits you ifWatch out for
HourlyYou visit a neighbourhood now and then: a meeting, a medical appointment, a dinnerCost adds up fast if you do it daily
MonthlyYou commute, or you park at home but have no space of your ownPaying for days you never use the car
Long-termYou want the same space for a year and no monthly renegotiationBeing locked in if your job or address changes

Spot Run prices these three tiers on its site: Hourly Parking at 1.50 USD, Monthly Space at 65 USD and Long-Term Lease at 180 USD. Check the product pages for what each tier covers, because the right tier depends on the space, not only on you.

When hourly rental makes sense

Hourly is for the visitor. You need a place near one address for a few hours, and you do not want to hunt for it.

The honest test: multiply your hourly parking days by the hours you stay. If you do it two or three times a month, hourly wins. If you catch yourself booking the same space four days a week, you are paying a convenience price for a routine, and a monthly rental will almost always be the calmer option.

Hourly also suits a trial. If you are unsure about a space, book a couple of hours first. Walk from the space to your destination. Time it. Then decide about a longer rental.

When a monthly space is the better deal

Monthly is the default for people who drive to work or who live in a block with no spare bay. You get the same spot every day. No circling, no 20 minutes lost before a morning meeting.

Think about the shape of your month. Do you travel often? Work from home two days a week? Then you may be paying for empty days. In that case, compare your real parking days to the monthly price before you commit. When to take a long-term lease

A long-term lease fits a stable life: the same job, the same flat, the same car. You lock in one space for a year and stop thinking about it.

Before you sign, ask what happens if you move or sell the car. A good listing owner will tell you the notice period and any conditions in plain words. If an owner cannot answer, treat that as information. Also confirm the space is available for the full term. A space that is free for three months is not a year-long space.

What a clear listing should include

A good listing removes guesswork. Spot Run asks owners for these details when they submit a space, because they are what stop mix-ups:

  • A numbered space. "Second bay on the left" is not an identifier. A painted or plated number is.
  • A photo with a distinct landmark. A grey rectangle of asphalt looks like every other one. Include a gate, a bin store, a stairwell door, a tree, a sign. Something you can match when you arrive.
  • Access instructions. Key, code or gate remote. Who opens it, and how. On Spot Run these are revealed after booking, so you have them before you drive over.
  • A phone number. A contact for the day something goes wrong.

If a listing is missing one of these, ask the owner before paying. If they cannot supply it, move on to another spot.

Checklist to avoid the wrong space and locked gates

Run through these steps before you pay, and again on the day.

  1. Match the number. Confirm the space number in the listing with the owner in writing, by message or in the app.
  2. Match the photo. Compare the landmark photo with the street view or with your own earlier visit. If the landmark has changed, ask for a new photo.
  3. Get the access method in advance. Gate code, key handover, remote. Ask who is reachable if the code fails, and until what hour.
  4. Check the size. Does your car, and your door opening, fit the bay? Ask for the width if the photo does not show it.
  5. Confirm the dates and hours. Start, end, and whether a car can leave and re-enter during that time.
  6. Save the phone number. And ask the owner to put a phone number in the windscreen or on the space, so a neighbour who finds a stranger in a bay can call instead of arguing.
  7. Photograph the car in the space on arrival. The number and the landmark in the same frame. That is your proof if there is a dispute later.

A spot you cannot identify on arrival is not a spot. Number, landmark, access, phone. Four lines that prevent most of the trouble.

Why the phone number in the window matters

The window phone number sounds minor. It is not. Residential courtyards are tight. A neighbour sees an unfamiliar car in a space that, as far as they know, belongs to someone else. Without a number to call, that turns into a note on the windscreen or a call to the police.

With a number, it is a thirty-second call. The owner confirms: yes, that is my renter, the space is booked. Problem gone. Owners who list their space should treat this as part of the setup, not an extra.

What happens if something goes wrong

Even with a careful checklist, a gate may not open or a space may be occupied. Document it straight away: photo of the situation, a call to the listed number, a message through the app. Spot Run has a dispute process for access issues, and it works best when you have that record.

On cost: Spot Run charges a 5% commission to the renter only, and owners keep 100% of their listed price. Check the product page for the full picture before you book.
